Wolsely Car Club Trip to Kingaroy - September 1999

Day 1

Firstly, I would like to thank Keith Dobson for all the planning and organisation which made our trip run so smoothly. Thanks must also go to George Swanson of the South Burnett Antique Car Club. After George became ill Neil Heiner help with arrangements. Four cars mat at Ferny Grove on a rainy morning on Saturday 11th September. They were Reg and Lurline in their 1500, Stan and Ann Duddy in a 4/50, Kevin and Heather in a 24/80, and Keith Dobson in his 18/85. Unfortunately Claire was unable to join Keith because of an accident. We do hope that by the time this article is in the magazine Claire will be back on deck. The Miller family met up with us at Esk in their 1500. The damp weather did not spoil our drive through beautiful Mt. Glorious scenery, or our stop at the lookout, where the Wivenhoe dam can be clearly seen. The sun even peeked out in time for morning tea at O'Shea's Crossing.

A quick look at a shop of old wares in Crow's Nest was next and on to Maidenwell for lunch. Denise Kennedy prepared a very good packed lunch with help-yourself tea and coffee for us to enjoy. The only other customers were a couple on a motorbike and we were glad we had the comfort of dry cars to travell in as the short showers continued to fall. On reaching Kingaroy we took a short trip to Mt. Wooroolin Lookout, before booking into our motel.

Dinner - End Day 1

After a rest we gathered at the Carrallee Hotel where we were joined by Norma and John Eyres and Norm Brunt. The meal was a real feast with helpings of roast dinner and huge servings of desert. When Heather saw the size of theavlova she was served, her courage deserted her and she traded for a smaller helping of trifle, which still proved daunting. I was unable to finish my mudcake. Only the men were game enough to tackle the large servings.

Day 2

On a sunny Sunday morning we went to the Airport to see many small planes gathered for their annual get-together. Some looked like mere toy but when airborne were quite impresive.

At 9:00am we met up with many members ofthe Burnett Club with various cars including a heritage ambulance, an army scout vehicle as well as a Morris Minor and Chryslers of various vintages. We proceeded on a tour of the countryside and various historic places around kingaroy, stooping for morning tea at Kumbia; but not before some of us got lost. It seems some of the locals don't know their way around as well as they thought they did. After pausing briefly at the hostoric Goodger Store, belonging to locals Sug and June Robson, we proceeded to the Stuart Winery.

After a tour of the Winery and some details of how it operates we were treated to a delicious BBQ lunch. Members of the SBACCQ donned the aprons and we sat and chatted in the picnic area kindly provided by the Winery. Some members tasted the wines and even aquired a bottle or two. After thanks and farewells we made our way home having enjoyed a memorable two days. Those who didn't come missed a good time and we hope more will come on future trips.

Tale Time - by Kevin Haynes

Keith ran out of petrol outside Bethaney - Sir Joh's home.

Stan ran out of petrol at the lights turning in to the main street of Kingaroy.

John had a flat tyre on Saturday while making a fast trip to Esk to join the run.

The flat tyre

I had a small businness emergency early Saturday. By the time the problems were resolved, the main group had left the first departure point. Worked out a fast track that would allow us to meet the main group just after morning tea and we set sail for a weekend of fun. Once clear of Brisbane we were pushing along at a bit more than 60 mph when it felt like I had been hit by a cross wind. This happened twice more before I decided to stop and check the car. I could see that it wasn't wind so there must be a mechnical problem. A quick walk round - one tyre on the back was a bit flat on the bottom. My 1500 is running radials on wider rims and the spare is smaller so as to fit in the boot. Fitted the spare and off we go again. Lookd a bit odd with the different wheels on the back. Stopped in Esk to repair the tyre and of course on Saturday the only tyre repair shop is closed. Ran on the spare through to Kingaroy. Found the only open Service Station in town and they agreed to replace the tube overnight and have the wheel ready in the morning.

Sunday morning - "Sorry we couldn't get the tyre off so it's still flat." 8:00am - Rang Nev Holznagel from Beaurepairs. Explained the problem and that we were leaving on the next leg of the run at 9:00. No problems - Nev likes old cars (he has a Mini for later) and is at the shop in 15 minutes. New tube in and wheel back on the car by 8:30 - time for a huge surprise - $20 including the tube, putting the wheel back on the car AND on a Sunday morning no less! We part with many thanks and a message for any of the car clubs - If you have a Rally in the Kingaroy area and you have tyre problems, call Nev at Beaurepairs on 071 62 4922 during business hours or emergency out of hours contact Nev at home on 071 62 3314.
